Uveitis

Treatment of ocular inflammation

What is Uveitis?

Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye that can cause redness, pain, blurred vision, or light sensitivity. It may affect one or both eyes and can result from autoimmune conditions, infections, or sometimes no clear cause. Because untreated uveitis can lead to vision loss, early diagnosis and specialized care are essential. At The Retina Institute, we use advanced imaging and tailored treatments to control inflammation, protect vision, and address the underlying cause when possible.

Common Types and Symptoms

Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye. It can affect different parts of the eye and may cause symptoms such as redness, eye pain, light sensitivity, floaters, or blurry vision.

Common types include:

  • Anterior uveitis (iritis): Inflammation in the front of the eye, often causing redness, pain, and light sensitivity.

  • Intermediate uveitis: Involves the middle of the eye, with floaters and blurred vision being common.

  • Posterior uveitis: Affects the back of the eye (retina and choroid), leading to vision changes or blind spots.

  • Panuveitis: Involves all layers of the eye, often with more severe symptoms.

Because uveitis can sometimes cause permanent vision loss if untreated, it’s important to see a specialist quickly if you notice these symptoms.

Causes and Risk Factors

Uveitis can happen for many reasons. In some cases, the exact cause is unknown, but common triggers include:

  • Autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or sarcoidosis

  • Infections like herpes, tuberculosis, syphilis, or Lyme disease

  • Eye injury or surgery

  • Systemic inflammatory diseases

Uveitis can affect anyone, but it is more common in people between ages 20 and 60 and in those with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions.

At The Retina Institute, uveitis care is tailored to each patient’s needs. Treatment may include prescription eye drops, oral medications, injections, or infusions to control inflammation and protect vision.

We have undergone rigorous training at a tertiary academic eye center, where we gained extensive experience treating complex and rare forms of uveitis. This advanced training allows him to provide cutting-edge, evidence-based therapies in a personalized, compassionate setting.
